Short description Understand common mental health conditions, spot when someone is struggling, know what to say and where to get help in the UK, and look after yourself. 50 written lessons plus 10 practice downloads.
Outcomes
  • Explain what mental health is, how it differs from a mental health condition, and why language and stigma matter
  • Recognise the pressures and protective factors that affect mental health, and spot early changes in yourself and others
  • Describe the common signs of depression, anxiety disorders and mental health problems around a new baby, using NHS information
  • Describe OCD, PTSD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, psychosis and schizophrenia, and challenge common myths
  • Ask about suicide clearly and directly, tell an emergency from an urgent situation, and know exactly who to contact in each UK nation
  • Start a supportive conversation, listen well and encourage someone to get help without taking over
  • Look after your own mental health with the five steps to wellbeing, your own early signs and a personal wellbeing plan
  • Support colleagues at work, including wellbeing conversations, reasonable adjustments and a supported return after time off
  • Support someone as a carer, volunteer or group organiser, including care plans, confidentiality and safeguarding
  • Signpost to the right help and complete a personal support plan you can keep and update
Requirements
  • No experience or background in health care needed: every term is explained in plain English
  • Some lessons cover self-harm and suicide; you can pause whenever you need to
  • This is an awareness course: it isn’t a mental health first aid qualification and doesn’t replace advice from a GP
  • A way to print or fill in PDF worksheets is useful but not essential; a notebook works too
