Short description Cut accurately, piece classic blocks, then layer, quilt and bind your first lap quilt, with metric and inch sizes throughout. 50 written lessons plus 10 practice downloads.
Outcomes
  • Use a rotary cutter, ruler, mat, iron and sewing machine safely and set up a comfortable workspace
  • Choose quilting fabrics and plan a palette using colour and value
  • Square up fabric and cut strips, squares, rectangles and half-square triangles accurately
  • Sew and check an accurate quarter-inch seam, and understand seam allowances in metric and inches
  • Chain piece, strip piece, press seams and match seams and points neatly
  • Make traditional blocks: four-patch, nine-patch, half-square triangles, pinwheel, flying geese, log cabin and simple stars
  • Plan a quilt top with a layout, sashing and borders, and work out how much fabric to buy
  • Choose wadding and backing, mark the quilting and baste the quilt sandwich
  • Quilt by machine with a walking foot, try free motion, hand quilt or tie, then bind and label a quilt
  • Plan and make a lap quilt from start to finish, and know the safety points for baby quilts and the basics of selling or gifting
Requirements
  • Some sewing experience: you can thread a sewing machine and sew a straight line
  • A sewing machine with a straight stitch; a quarter-inch foot and a walking foot are useful
  • A rotary cutter, cutting mat and quilting ruler, or the money to buy them as Section 1 explains
  • Fabric for practice and projects, bought as you go using the fabric calculations in the lessons
  • A way to print the PDF worksheets, templates and grids is useful but not essential
