Course description

Just become a team leader, supervisor or manager? This course shows you, step by step, how to lead your team with confidence: running one-to-ones, giving feedback, delegating, handling tricky conversations and leading change. It's practical and down to earth, written for real workplaces such as offices, shops, warehouses, care settings and public services.

It's a full course, not a quick list of tips. There are 10 sections and 56 step-by-step written lessons, and every lesson ends with a practical task you try with your own team. Every section has a practice pack of templates, scripts and planners. Throughout the course you follow a new team leader through their first few months in charge of the team they used to work in.

What you'll learn

  • Your new role: moving from team member to manager, your first 90 days, and managing friends and former peers.
  • Communication: listening, clear briefings, team huddles, meetings and one-to-ones that matter.
  • Building your team: trust, psychological safety, clear roles, recognition and leading a hybrid team.
  • Performance: SMART objectives, tracking progress without micromanaging, reviews and development plans.
  • Feedback and coaching: the SBI feedback model and the GROW coaching model, with scripts to use.
  • Delegation and decisions: what to hand over, how to brief it, and working well with your own manager.
  • Difficult situations: underperformance, conflict, absence and wellbeing, and when to involve HR.
  • Change and growth: leading your team through change and looking after yourself as a manager.

Three final projects

You'll build your own 90-day leadership plan, plan and script a difficult conversation you're likely to face, and finish with a one-year leadership development plan.

Who this course is for

  • New team leaders, supervisors and first-line managers.
  • People stepping up to manage the team they used to work in.
  • Anyone preparing to apply for their first management role.
  • Volunteers and coordinators who lead small teams.

How the course works

Read each lesson, then do the Try it task with your own team (or a past team if you're not managing yet). The planners open in Excel, Google Sheets or similar. The sections on difficult situations give general guidance, not legal advice: you'll always be pointed to your organisation's policies, HR and Acas. You keep lifetime access, so you can come back whenever a new challenge comes up.
