Short description Paint with acrylics at home: kit, a safe set-up, colour mixing, brushwork and composition, then still lifes, landscapes and a final project. 50 written lessons plus 10 practice downloads.
Outcomes
  • Choose a starter kit of eight colours by pigment name, brushes, knives, surfaces and a stay-wet palette
  • Set up a safe, tidy place to paint, read paint labels, and deal with paint water and leftover paint responsibly
  • Work with fast drying and colour shift, keep paint workable, and control thin, creamy and thick paint
  • Mix greens, oranges, purples, greys and browns, avoid mud, and judge value, temperature and saturation
  • Use washes, blending, soft and hard edges, dry brush, scumbling, glazing, impasto and knife work
  • Plan paintings with simple shapes, thumbnails, value sketches and a clear focal point
  • Paint a still life with convincing light, shadow, reflections and glass, plus simple flowers and textures
  • Paint landscapes with skies, trees, water and a sense of distance
  • Work from your own photos and from life, build layers, correct mistakes and keep a practice habit
  • Finish, varnish in outline, frame and store your paintings, and complete a final painting of your own
Requirements
  • No painting experience needed; if you've tried watercolour, that helps but isn't essential
  • A small starter kit of student acrylic paints, a few synthetic brushes, two knives and some acrylic paper or boards; Section 1 explains what to choose
  • A table near a window that opens, and a place to keep materials out of reach of children and pets
  • Kitchen paper, two water jars, a lidded food box for a stay-wet palette and baking parchment; a way to print the PDF sheets is useful but not essential
