Short description Take natural, flattering portraits of family and friends on a camera or phone: light, lenses, focus, posing, children, groups, candids and editing. 50 written lessons plus 10 practice downloads.
Outcomes
  • Choose a focal length and distance that flatter faces, and blur or simplify backgrounds on a camera or a phone
  • Keep the eyes sharp every time with the right focus mode, face and eye detection or tap to focus
  • Find and use flattering natural light: windows, open shade, golden hour, overcast days and lamplight
  • Shape light with a reflector, and understand bounce, fill and one off-camera flash in outline
  • Help people relax and direct them kindly, using prompts rather than stiff poses
  • Photograph babies, children, teenagers, older relatives, couples and groups with care
  • Catch candid moments, tell family stories, photograph events and low light, and take self-portraits
  • Compose, crop and choose portraits, edit with natural skin, print well and share thoughtfully
  • Understand consent, privacy, UK law in general terms, copyright and model releases, and complete a family portrait set
Requirements
  • No experience needed. Lesson 1.4 recaps the basic settings briefly
  • A camera with interchangeable lenses or a compact camera, or a smartphone; every lesson works on both
  • Willing family members or friends to photograph
  • A sheet of white card or foam board helps from Section 4; a folding reflector, tripod and flash are optional
  • A printer helps for the practice packs and prompt cards, but isn’t essential
