Short description Use Python, pandas and openpyxl to clean messy Excel exports, do lookups, totals and pivot tables, and write formatted report workbooks automatically. 50 written lessons plus 10 practice downloads.
Outcomes
  • Install Python, pandas and openpyxl on Windows or a Mac and run scripts that always find their data
  • Read workbooks and CSV files into pandas, including messy exports with title rows, totals and blank rows
  • Do everyday Excel jobs in pandas: filtering, sorting, calculated columns, text and dates
  • Replace VLOOKUP, SUMIFS and pivot tables with merge, groupby and pivot_table, and check the results
  • Clean text numbers, mixed date formats, duplicates and untidy names, then combine months of exports into one file
  • Write tables to Excel with pandas: several sheets, appending a sheet and one workbook per region
  • Read and write cells with openpyxl, including form-style timesheets and a template workbook
  • Format reports with fonts, number formats, conditional formatting, Excel tables, drop-down lists and charts
  • Turn a monthly report into one script with settings, checks that reconcile totals and a log, and share it with colleagues
Requirements
  • You should know basic Python: variables, lists, loops, if and functions, and how to run a script; lesson 1.4 gives a short refresher
  • You should be comfortable with Excel, including lookups, SUMIFS and pivot tables, as the course explains pandas in those terms
  • A Windows PC or Mac where you can install Python 3.12 or newer from python.org and the free pandas and openpyxl packages
  • Excel, or another spreadsheet program, to open the workbooks your scripts create
