Coming back to work after a career break can feel like a big step. You may wonder whether your skills are out of date, how to explain the gap, whether work will fit round family or caring, and where to even begin. A break for children, caring, illness, redundancy, study or a move doesn't wipe out what you can do, but it does help to have a plan.
This course takes you from first thoughts to a return pack you can use straight away. You'll decide what you want from work now, look at money, childcare and caring in general terms, rebuild confidence with evidence, find the transferable skills from your break, refresh your skills, and explain the gap honestly on your CV, on forms and at interview. You'll also learn how returner programmes work, your general rights to request flexible working and to fair treatment, how to reconnect with contacts and search well, and how to handle interviews, offers and your first 90 days back. For general CV and interview skills in depth, CV Writing and Interview Skills: Get Noticed and Get Hired is a good companion course.
There are 10 sections and 50 written lessons, each with a worked example and a short task to try. You follow Adeola, a payroll administrator from Newark-on-Trent who took a career break in 2019 to raise her children and later help care for her mum, through her return in 2026, from her first plans to a place on a returner programme, slips included. Every section has a practice pack with a worksheet, example answers and a cheat sheet, plus a starting point check, a values and options worksheet, a skills audit, CV layouts for returners as Word, plain text and PDF files, a gap explanation script builder, a job search tracker spreadsheet, interview practice cards, a 90-day plan and a model return pack.
Parents, carers and anyone else in the UK coming back to paid work after a long break, whatever the reason. You don't need any previous course. You'll need a computer, tablet or phone to read the lessons and a PDF reader for the practice packs; a word processor and a spreadsheet app help with the CV layouts and the job search tracker.
This course gives general information about returning to work in the UK at the time of writing. It isn't legal, financial, benefits or medical advice. Rules on benefits, childcare support and employment rights change and differ between the four nations, so the lessons point you to GOV.UK, nidirect, Acas and other official sources. The course doesn't name or recommend any employer, returner programme, recruitment agency, job website or training provider, and it can't promise a job. The people and organisations in the course are fictional.
